When we acquired La Jaillerie, we did not know that there was a pond on the site, because it is not shown on any plans. Whilst trying to make our way through the undergrowth, we saw water in front of us and, when we got closer, what we thought at first was only a puddle of water turned out to be a large pond.
Old aerial photographs show that this pond was dug sometime between 1959 and 1969.

How does the pond fill with water?
During the summer of 2023, the water level in the pond slowly decreased until in November there were only two tiny puddles left.
Strong rains then saw him the pond fill spectacularly in just a few days.

But was this rapid rise in the water level solely due to the rain falling from above or did it fill by other means?
There is a ditch that extends from west to east towards the pond and this feeds the pond during heavy rain - there may even be a second natural pond along the length of this ditch.
Perhaps the name of the site could offer another explanation of how the pond is filled. The word "Jaillerie" does not seem to appear in any French dictionary but it looks very much like the word "Jaillir" which means a spring or geyser.
So maybe "La Jaillerie" refers to water from an underground source and this helps the pond fill up.
